Canadian Solar is proposing to develop several solar photovoltaic projects in Ontario. The proposed projects range in size from 7-megawatt to 10-megawatt and are located in central, eastern and northern Ontario. The proposed projects were approved by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) as Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) projects or Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) projects. The proposed projects require approval from the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE) through the Renewable Energy Approval (REA) regulations.

About Solar Power
Solar power harnesses the power of the sun to create heat and electricity. In Canada, the solar resource, or potential to generate solar power, is one of the best in all of the industrialized nations. Electricity is generated from solar energy by photovoltaic (PV) panels. PV power systems have are completely passive, have no moving parts, and are reliable units requiring little maintenance. Once installed, solar PV arrays generate no noise, airborne or water-borne pollutants. Conveniently, maximum solar power production coincides with peak demand in Canada, in the summer when air conditioner loads are heaviest. In the summer, Toronto has better solar radiation then Miami!

The global solar industry has been increasing by 35% a year and is now a $15 billion market. Market leaders include Portugal and Germany, where solar will provide 10% of peak power requirements within the next 8 years. Canada is ranked 14th out of 20 reporting nations for installed solar power but the country is poised to emerge as one of the fastest growing solar markets in the next few years. Indeed, solar power is growing by 20% a year in Canada.

:: pv farm project ::
  1. The Sun’s radiation hits the solar photovoltaic (PV) panel and forces electrons in the panels free of their bonds.
  2. An electric field is created from the free electrons, which results in an electrical current and the production of direct current (DC) electricity.
  3. The Inverter converts the DC electricity to Alternating Current (AC) electricity to match the local distribution grid.
  4. Power generated from the solar panels is metered and monitored.
  5. Electricity is distributed to the local distribution grid for use in local homes and businesses.

Project Overview
The Discovery Light site is located in the Township of Brock in the Regional Municipality of Durham County, Ontario. Project size is approximately 11.5MW DC.
